
Honoring Service and Leadership: 2025 Youth & Volunteer Award Winners
United Way of Northwest Georgia’s Second Annual Youth and Volunteer Celebration was held on Monday, April 21, at Dalton Utilities. It was a night to remember! We are grateful for our sponsors: Community Foundation of NWGA, Dalton Utilities, Kiwanis Club of Dalton, Mannington Phenix, Mohawk Industries, Sandee and Rick Hooper, and Shaw Industries. United Way honors volunteers in Whitfield and Murray counties whose service has exemplified a commitment to bringing hope, promise, and opportunity to the lives of others.
Adult Volunteer Awards
Elaine Butler Award
David McDaniel received the Elaine Butler Award for Outstanding Volunteerism in Murray County, presented by Carlene Mutter and Renae Richards, for dedicating over 160 volunteer hours to Murray County. From building theater sets and leading river cleanups to mentoring youth through 4-H, David serves with heart and humility. Known as “Mr. David,” he’s beloved by local youth for his steady presence and encouragement. His service spans generations—uplifting young people, supporting families, and improving the environment. Inspired by his parents’ example, David believes no job is too big or too small when it comes to making a difference. Murray County is incredibly fortunate to have such a dedicated, compassionate, and inspiring community leader.
Connie Woodward Award
Julia Harnois was honored with the Connie Woodward Award for Outstanding Volunteerism in Whitfield County, presented by Meghan Corvin and Marianne Murry, for dedicating over 660 volunteer hours in 2024. From mentoring teens through 4-H to leading health literacy workshops, Julia empowers others with knowledge and compassion. She’s improved lives at the Humane Society, fed families through Rock Bridge Church, and supported students as a leader in the Southeast Band Booster Club. Her service is fueled by love for her community and the example she sets for her daughter—proving that giving back is a family value. We are incredibly fortunate to have such a dedicated, compassionate, and inspiring community leader.
Elbert Shaw Memorial Scholarships
In honor of the legacy of Elbert Shaw’s commitment to volunteer service and youth development, Shaw Industries annually partners with United Way of Northwest Georgia to offer two $5,000 scholarships for high school students. The Elbert Shaw Memorial Scholarship seeks to recognize young people who are active, empowered members of our community. The award recipients are youth who work in cooperation with their peers and community leaders to create positive changes in society, including identifying problems and implementing solutions. Curtis Callaway, Sr. Director of Corporate Social Responsibility at Shaw Industries, and Emily Sane, Cause Marketing Program Manager at Shaw Industries, presented the scholarships to Charlsey Richards and Tasneem Issa.
Elbert Shaw Memorial Scholarships Recipients
Charlsey Richards, Salutatorian of Murray County High School’s Class of 2025, was awarded the Elbert Shaw Memorial Scholarship for her 475 hours of service in 2024. Charlsey exemplifies leadership through service—organizing events, mentoring youth, and supporting families in need. One of her most impactful roles is as a junior board member for the Miracle League, where she advocates for inclusive sports and supports individuals with physical and mental challenges. She also serves on United Way’s Youth United Council and leads environmental initiatives that promote sustainability and community safety. Her empathy, drive, and unwavering commitment to helping others reflect the very heart of Elbert Shaw’s legacy. Charlsey plans to study biology at the University of North Georgia and later transfer to Mercer University to become a physician assistant specializing in reproductive endocrinology.
Tasneem Isa, a senior at Dalton High School, was awarded the Elbert Shaw Memorial Scholarship for her 162 hours of impactful service in 2024. From leading a heartfelt card-making project for patients at Hamilton Medical Center to raising over $10,000 for local charities as Student Council Vice President, Tasneem exemplifies servant leadership. Her work through United Way’s Youth United Council, NHS, and FCCLA includes organizing park cleanups, book drives, and blanket donations for those in need. At the Dalton Islamic Center, she also helps children connect with their culture through language and community events. Tasneem’s compassion, leadership, and commitment to building a stronger, more connected community have inspired many. She will attend Georgia Tech this fall.
Youth Volunteer of the Year
Each year, we honor a youth member who goes above and beyond to strengthen our community, embodying United Way’s mission through outstanding volunteerism and leadership. Madison Gallman, a senior at Murray County High School, received the Youth Volunteer of the Year Award, presented by Marianne Murry, Chair of United Way’s Volunteer Center Cabinet. With over 875 volunteer hours in 2024, Madison served at AdventHealth, mentored through 4-H, and supported the Humane Society. She’s known for her kindness, strong leadership, and commitment to others. An active member of the Youth United Council, Madison leads by example and inspires her peers. She will attend Berry College to study biology and plans to become a pediatric dermatology physician assistant.

Amanda Burt, President of United Way of Northwest Georgia, and Hayley Poillucci, Director of Volunteer Engagement, presented our 31 United Way Youth United Council Members with their certificates and graduation cords. The Youth United Council is a leadership program of United Way of Northwest Georgia, featuring a curriculum from the University of Georgia’s J.W. Fanning Institute for Leadership Development through its ‘Youth Leadership in Action’ program. Designed to build leadership skills, foster teamwork, and encourage civic engagement, the program helps students develop the tools needed for a successful transition into adulthood.

Presidential Volunteer Service Awards
The Presidential Volunteer Service Award honors individuals whose service positively impacts communities in every corner of the nation and inspires those around them to take action. This spring, the United Way Volunteer Center Cabinet will present 68 Presidential Volunteer Service Awards to students at their school awards banquets. That equals over 12,602 volunteer hours!!
